Benefits of Plant-Based Eating🌿

The most recent Canada’s Food Guide has changed the food categories and grouped all protein-containing foods into one.  The recommendation is to choose protein foods that come from plants more often.  There is a growing body of research that supports the positive environmental and health effects of including more plant-based proteins in our diets.  Eating strictly vegan can feel overwhelming and/or restrictive for some, however, simply choosing plant-based protein foods more often can contribute to overall positive heath.  Plant-based foods tend to be higher in fibre and lower in saturated fat which lowers risk of cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.  Examples of plant-based proteins include beans, peas, lentils, seeds and seed butters, tofu, edamame and fortified soy beverage.  If you only eat plant-based foods it is important to include foods and beverages that are fortified with vitamin B12 as this vitamin is only found naturally in animal-based foods.

The current menu at Wholesome Kids Catering includes plant-based dishes such as BBQ Baked Beans, Bean and Corn Salad as well as a variety of vegan muffins and loaves.  By serving plant-based proteins on the main menu, it allows for children who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet to enjoy the same foods as their peers.  For non vegan dishes, we do our best to provide replacement options that most closely resemble the main meal.
